Following Hermès’ collaboration with Apple, the fashion house has now teamed up with luxury automaker Rolls-Royce to create a one-of-a-kind bespoke Phantom for Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa.
Specially designed and handcrafted by a team of specialists at Rolls-Royce in West Sussex and Hermès in Paris, the Phantom Oribe was envisioned by Maezawa as a “land jet,” bringing the exclusivity of private air travel to the road.
“This magnificent expression of our pinnacle product represents a landmark for Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, bringing together two houses with more than three centuries’ combined experience and heritage,” said Rolls-Royce CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös.
The Phantom Oribe’s exterior features a two-tone mix of green and cream, matching the glazes of antique Japanese Oribe ware that Maezawa is a prominent collector of. The Oribe Green was a custom-made color, and Rolls-Royce, in a rare move, will make the paint available for Maezawa to use on his private jet, too.
The interior of the car is finished in Hermès Enea Green leather, extending even to the steering wheel, duchess handles, gear selector, and rotary controls for the car’s settings. Not to mention, the car comes with hidden compartments also enrobed with Hermès leather, such as a luggage compartment, decanter stowage compartment, and even a Champagne cooler.
Of course, the interior also consists of Rolls-Royce’s signature craftsmanship. The wooden speaker frets were formed by meticulously perforating the Open Pore Royal Walnut veneer applied to the doors, creating a seamless look throughout. And in a first for the automaker, the interior features Hermès ‘Toile H’ canvas on the armrests, center and rear consoles, and the signature headliner.
For the Phantom’s Gallery, a feature found only on Rolls-Royce, Hermès commissioned an artwork based on a design by famed French illustrator Pierre Péron, who was the artist behind many of the brand’s iconic scarves. The work, inspired by the Hermès horse motif, was hand-painted on Open Pore Royal Walnut, before being encased behind glass, just like in an art gallery.
