If you’ve been surfing the web, you’ve probably been seeing cryptocurrency news everywhere. Now, there’s a new brand jumping on the craze: Bitcoin Pizza.
Cryptocurrency influencer and tech investor Anthony Pompliano has unveiled his brand-new initiative, Bitcoin Pizza, with the aim of funding research and development for cryptocurrency.
In a tweet, Pompliano said: “Today I am announcing Bitcoin Pizza – a new national pizza brand that is launching in 10 cities. The first pizzas will be delivered this Saturday, which is the 11-year anniversary of the infamous bitcoin pizza transaction.”
According to the Entrepreneur, Pompliano is referencing an transaction from way back in 2010, when a Bitcoin user purchased two Papa John’s pizzas for 10,000 Bitcoin, marking the first retail transaction ever made with the cryptocurrency.
Proceeds from the sale of the Bitcoin Pizzas will go towards the Human Rights Foundation’s Bitcoin Development Fund.
“Just as Bitcoin is working to disrupt the incumbent banks, Bitcoin Pizza will be working to disrupt the incumbent corporate pizza chains,” Pompliano explained.
Five different flavors are on offer, starting from US$23.95, allowing you to “order a slice of history.”
Choose from quirky names such as ‘Laser Eyes’, 'No Keys, No Cheese’, ‘Lightning Meat’, ‘Capital Greens’, and a pineapple and ham pizza named ‘Satoshi’s Favorite’, referring to Bitcoin’s elusive founder Satoshi Nakamoto.
Customers can head to the website to place an order, so long as they’re located in Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Austin, Houston, Chicago, Miami, Washington DC, New York City, and Boston. Deliveries are slated to take place from May 22.
Ironically, Bitcoin Pizza won’t be accepting Bitcoin as payment for the pizzas. You’ll have to pay with actual cash to access them. Can it really be called ‘Bitcoin Pizza’ if the pie isn’t bought using Bitcoins? You decide.
