A wristwatch worn by Spanish artist Pablo Picasso fetched US$267,000 at an auction, surpassing its initial high estimate of US$22,000 by over 12 times.
The rare timepiece was designed by Swiss watchmaker Michael Z Berger in 1960, and is one of only three ever made.
Interestingly, instead of the usual digits that appear on watch faces, this one bears the name of the famed artist instead, spelling out “Pablo Picasso.”
Picasso had given the watch to his friend, late Greek sculptor Lela Kanellopoulou. The vendor that put it up for auction was one of Kanellopoulou’s relatives.
“This was an extraordinary find and we are so thrilled at this well-deserved result for such a special timepiece,” said Jonathan Darracott, Global Head of Watches at auction house Bonhams.
“With this watch, I have had a chance to hold history in my hands and this has to be one that will make a lasting impression – the like of which I am unlikely to see again,” he elaborated.
