Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi has broken a new record: its latest fast-charging technology can charge a smartphone to 100% in just eight minutes.
Using wired charging at 200w, a modified Xiaomi MI 11 Pro with a 4,000mAh battery charges to 10% in just 44 seconds. In three minutes, it’s half-full, and fully charged at just eight minutes.
With wireless charging at 120w, it’s still a rather fast charge—the smartphone goes from 0% to 100% in just 15 minutes.
This is a significant improvement from what the tech firm unveiled last year, in which a smartphone was fully charged in 19 minutes, as per Mashable. Now, it’s more than halved the time taken to get from 0% to 100%, apparently setting new world records for wired and wireless charging phones.
However, there’s yet to be word on when this fast-charging technology will become available to consumers. At the moment, the Xiaomi MI 11 offers 55w wired charging and 50w wireless charging capabilities.
While tech fans are impressed by the charging speed, there might be concerns over battery life and degradation. Xiaomi has yet to release any statistics on how this fast-charging technology will affect a smartphone’s battery health, but it’ll certainly be at the top of consumers’ minds.
