Health authorities should consider enlisting Cristiano Ronaldo as an ambassador, as in one fell swoop, one tiny gesture from the Portuguese soccer star cost Coca-Cola US$4 billion in market value, ESPN reports.
If you haven’t seen that iconic clip from the pre-match Euro 2020 press conference by now, Ronaldo put away two Coca-Cola bottles that were placed in front of his seat and replaced them with a bottle of water, before mouthing the word “agua” (water). This unexpectedly took a blow on Coca-Cola, whose stock was also watered-down by 1.6% after the move.
Since then, a few brands have joined in on the fizzle. The World Health Organization, for instance, turned the gesture into a PSA for a healthy diet. “Stay fit and healthy like Cristiano by reducing sugar consumption and limiting intake of sweets and sugary drinks,” it tweeted, directing followers to resources about eating well.
Evian also reminded drinkers to “stay hydrated,” while calling seven—the number on Ronaldo’s shirt—“the best number in the world!”
Coca-Cola owns a number of water brands itself, so it’s high time it raises them on the pedestal too.
