In April, LG Electronics—the third-largest phone maker in the US—announced it was ceasing its smartphone business worldwide to focus on its other offerings.
Well, it turns out that LG could still be selling smartphones, just not its own.
As reported by BusinessKorea, via BGR, LG is in negotiations with Apple to retail iPhones, iPads, and Apple Watches in more than 400 LG Best Shops in South Korea. That’s right, the former Android smartphone maker has picked Apple products—instead of Android—as its favorite handheld devices after its own.
The report also mentions that LG and Apple are in talks of setting up designated Apple corners in the stores, either manned by Apple employees or LG Best Shop staff.
One request they have yet to agree on is Apple’s insistence on displaying its laptops and desktops in the outlets too, according to BusinessKorea. Computers are one category LG doesn’t want Apple to claim, as the South Korean tech brand wants its Gram laptops as standalone computers.
In South Korea, Android stands as the most popular mobile OS in the country, likely driven by a preference for Samsung models. LG’s counterintuitive plans to serve a slice of Apple pie could boost its presence as a market challenger.
A spokesperson for LG Electronics told BusinessKorea that “nothing has been decided yet,” and that the brand is “exploring all possibilities.”
