Right off the bat, SpaceX’s toilet is already a notch above most other earthbound toilets; it offers a space to use the bathroom far away from people you know. But privacy isn’t its only perk.
As Elon Musk’s aerospace firm prepares for the world’s first all-civilian space mission in September, news outlets are fixating on an accidentally luxurious facility the SpaceX Dragon capsule will carry. Per Travel + Leisure, the washroom is located in a glass dome at the spaceship’s nose, inadvertently providing 360-degree views.
It was never intended for the bathroom to be this swanky—it’s just where the glass cupola is, which is designed to give crew members an all-around view. Needless to say, users will be taking their time in it contemplating the meaning of the universe from their throne.
Shift4 Payments CEO Jared Isaacman, who will lead a four-person civilian crew on a three-day mission in September, is especially excited about this facility. “It’s not a ton of privacy,” he told Insider. “But you do have this kind of privacy curtain that cuts across the top of the spacecraft so that you can separate yourself from everyone else. And that also happens to be where the glass cupola is. So, you know, when people do inevitably have to use the bathroom, they’re going to have one hell of a view.”
