A brand new iPad mini could be hitting the market as soon as later in the year, 9to5Mac has learned. Codenamed J310, it will boast Apple’s latest A15 processor, like the new flagship iPhones which are also expected later this year.
New features will also include a magnetic Smart Connector, like the existing iPad Air and iPad Pro, and USB-C connectivity. Both open the iPad up to a much larger range of compatible peripherals and accessories, instead of being limited to the usual Lightning cable that most of Apple’s devices use.
This isn’t the first we’ve heard of the design changes coming to the iPad mini; just last month, Bloomberg reported tweaks like a narrower screen border, testing of MagSafe, and the removal of the home button. The aluminum back is also said to be replaced by glass.
Of course, this is all still subject to change; Apple hasn’t confirmed anything, or even said if the iPad mini really is in the works right now.
Apart from the exciting new design, an entry-level iPad, codenamed J181, is also in the works, according to the source. It will utilize an A13 chip, which is a step up from the current A12 chip, boosting the performance of the more affordable device.
