These Nike Air Jordans might be among the rarest to exist in the world. Created for Michael Jordan in commemoration of his appearance in Space Jam (1996), the sneakers are in “deadstock” condition, having never been worn. They were sold at Sotheby’s for US$176,400, after having been estimated in the US$150,000 to US$200,000 range.
This pair is a “Player Sample,” meaning that it was made specifically for Jordan himself. Although the footwear wasn’t worn by the star player, the Jordan 11 style was carried onto the pair he had on in the 1996 NBA playoffs. That season turned out to be a standout in his career, in which he won his fourth MVP title, leading the Chicago Bulls to 72 wins.
Nike designer Tinker Hatfield had this pair made for Jordan to prevent him from accidentally rolling his ankle if he were to suddenly change direction in the middle of a game. The colorway is exclusive to this specific pair of sneakers, too, and was never available as retail.
In Jordan’s size 13, the shoes come offered neatly in a bespoke velvet-lined wooden box. It’s signed by Jordan too, with silver ink deliciously contrasting the black, and certified by Upper Deck Authenticated.
Space Jam was a hit when released, starring various NBA stars including Larry Bird, Charles Barkley, Patrick Ewing, and Jordan himself, alongside Bugs Bunny. It grossed over US$230 million worldwide during its time in theaters, and still remains well-loved today.
