Whether they’ve got company to join them in family games or not, art lovers are bound to appreciate these intricate UNO cards displaying artwork by activist, street artist and Obey Giant founder Shepard Fairey, the figure behind the famed Obey and Barack Obama Hope posters. The Fairey treatment is apparent even in the typography.
The deck is the latest to join UNO’s celebration of defining artists like Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Nina Chanel Abney. This version is the first to be plastic-free and is constructed with sustainable, recycled, and recyclable materials, in line with Fairey’s activism and Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Mattel’s green hope to achieve “100% recycled, recyclable or bio-based plastic materials across all products and packaging by 2030.”
“I was honored to work with a brand as iconic as UNO to translate my artistic vision to this medium,” Fairey shared in a press release. “As I continue to search for unexpected ways to connect with people, I loved the challenge of finding the balance between my voice and visual language combined with the recognizable visuals of UNO.” The artist also expressed his gratitude that his work “can be part of the conversation as friends and families enjoy a game of UNO.”
As part of the partnership, UNO is also making a donation to ocean protection nonprofit Ocean Conservancy on behalf of Fairey. The deck retailed for US$20, but has since sold out, though Mattel has set aside 10 signed copies to be given away on social media.
