Fortnite by Epic Games saw a new mode added to the game today, bearing a highly similar concept and name to another indie game, Innersloth’s hit title Among Us.
In the new ‘Imposters Mode’, a group of up to 10 players has to work out who is trying to sabotage the group. Agents work to complete tasks across a map, while Imposters try to sabotage them in any way they can, including assassination.
Agents will be able to vote against players they believe to be Imposters, and if they are correct, the Imposter is kicked out of the group and the Agents win. Sound familiar?
Innersloth’s developers have expressed disappointment, and understandably with Adriel Wallick, lead Unity programmer, sharing a comic on art theft on Twitter. A reply on a tweet by Victoria Tran, community director, points out that the words “just felt too similar to be a coincidence.”
The words just felt too similar to be a coincidence. I’m 90% sure that Among Us’s surge inspired this game mlde

Anyway - just feeling pretty bummed today.

Everything in the world was already feeling insurmountable, so this was just another fun reminder of how tiny we all really are.
Gary Porter, Unity programmer, has also shared rather hard-to-ignore similarities in the map layouts.

Fortnite has been called out many a time for lifting liberal amounts of inspiration from pop culture without proper attribution, such as its dance moves.
While Among Us wasn’t the first game of its kind, its explosive success in the latter half of 2020 popularized the concept, alongside its mechanics, and made it synonymous with the game. Even the word “imposters” seems to be inseparable from the game’s concept now.
Perhaps ironically, the description of ‘Imposters Mode’ is largely reminiscent of the kerfuffle at hand: “With danger around every corner and the facility under constant threat—trust nobody.”
