While we can’t quite remember what we were doing at age 12, it probably wasn’t anything close to this.
12-year-old Benyamin Ahmed has made an impressive sum from selling pixelated whale doodles to NFT enthusiasts.
Ahmed told CNBC he was intrigued by blockchain technology and non-fungible tokens (NFTs), and was inspired to create his own collection after playing video games like Minecraft as well as chatting with other creators.
And wow, has he done well, as Ahmed is reportedly set to earn nearly US$400,000 in Ethereum.
This large fortune happened in just a day for Ahmed, as his collection of 3,350 Weird Whales NFTs sold out overnight, as per Futurism. Similar to the CryptoPunks collection that also went viral, each of his NFTs is simply a pixelated cartoon image.
According to CNBC, the entire collection sold out in just nine hours. Ahmed had spent just US$300 to create the collection, but has now made US$250,000 from the initial sale in July, and an extra US$94,000 in royalties since. By the end of the month, it’s expected his sales will reach US$400,000.
However, if you’re wondering what a 12-year-old could possibly spend so much money on, it looks like Ahmed has a long-term plan set in mind.
“I plan to keep all my Ether and not convert it to fiat money. It might be early proof that, in the future, maybe everyone doesn’t [need] a bank account, and just has an Ether address and wallet,” he said.
Despite what you may think of the NFT collection, no one can say the boy doesn’t have incredible foresight.
