In January this year, Twitter announced that it had “permanently suspended” the infamous Twitter account of former US president Donald Trump due to “the risk of further incitement of violence.”
This was a crackdown made final by the social media platform, among others, to ban him from using his platform after his supporters attacked the US Capitol on January 6, inciting violence and leading to deaths.
More than nine months later, he hasn’t given up on trying to get his platform back. Now, he’s attempting to get the law to work in his favor: he’s suing the social media company from Florida, since the state has expressed interest in introducing a law to prevent tech companies from removing politicians’ platforms.
Trump filed a request for preliminary injunction against Twitter, having said that the banning of his account violates his First Amendment rights, which cite freedom of speech.
According to Bloomberg, the filing claimed that Twitter “exercises a degree of power and control over political discourse in this country that is immeasurable, historically unprecedented, and profoundly dangerous to open democratic debate.”
Reuters states that it also compared his tweets being labeled with “misleading information” or “glorifying violence,” while the Taliban is still being allowed to use the platform to tweet about their victories.
It’s unlikely that the Floridian law Trump is referring to will take full effect, though, since it has been argued that, well, it violates free speech in itself. As of now, it’s been put on hold.
If it doesn’t come into effect, then he might just have to restart his blog once more.
