Young environmental activist Greta Thunberg “CAN GO TO HELL,” read posters in Stockholm, her home city—and they have certainly gotten more than a double-take.
The messaging comes from Hell Pizza, a New Zealand chain that promises 100% carbon-neutral pizza deliveries in its country. With context, you know the company means well.
The tongue-in-cheek move follows critical comments made by Thunberg about Kiwi prime minister Jacinda Ardern. “It’s funny that people believe Jacinda Ardern and people like that are climate leaders,” she famously told The Guardian. “That just tells you how little people know about the climate crisis.”
Hell Pizza, however, assures that it’s ready for Thunberg the next time she pays New Zealand a visit. To make its deliveries “carbon-neutral,” the company purchases “carbon credits” to offset over one million deliveries per year.
CEO Ben Cumming told the New Zealand Herald that the company is planning to do more, including implementing a national rollout of electric delivery vehicles, enforcing renewable energy in stores, and sourcing more than 95% ingredients and materials within the nation.
“We hope our story might inspire other businesses to think about their impact on the planet, and we’d love to show Greta what Kiwi businesses are already doing to make the world a better place,” he added.
