My Neighbor Totoro is getting a new neighbor on Netflix: Earwig and the Witch.
Netflix confirmed on Wednesday that Studio Ghibli’s first fully CGI 3D animation will join 21 other films already streaming on the platform, having just secured international rights to it. However, the deal excludes the US and Japan.
Thanks to a partnership with global distribution firm Wild Bunch International and Canada’s GKIDS, Netflix is able to stream Studio Ghibli films in most markets.
Directed by Hayao Miyazaki’s son Goro Miyazaki and adapted from Diana Wynne Jones’s novel of the same name, Earwig and the Witch features a young, headstrong orphan girl whose life takes a strange and challenging turn after she is made to live with a selfish witch.
“We’re thrilled that our film Earwig and the Witch will reach many countries and territories through Netflix,” says Goro Miyazaki. “The film is Studio Ghibli’s first fully 3D CGI film which prompted us with an exciting challenge to reflect the spirit and pride of our studio using this new artform… We hope you will come to love our Earwig, just like you enjoyed spending time with the main characters in our last 21 films.”
The director concludes his announcement with a hopeful message: “Today, the world is forced to continue its journey into a chaotic era. We hope this film will inspire our children who live long into the future.”
Fans can catch the 3D film on Netflix starting November 18.
