Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon and Blue Origin, said Earth could one day turn into a “natural resort.” He spoke at the annual Ignatius Forum in Washington, saying that his space venture isn’t just for taking humans to other planets but to also help them settle and get jobs outbound.
One of the world’s wealthiest individuals, Bezos posited that in the future, humans would have their “default homes” on other planets, and said that over a million people could be working on another planet “soon,” though he didn’t provide an exact timeline.
“Over centuries, most or many of the people will be born in space. It will be their first home. They will be born in these colonies, they will live in these colonies. They may visit Earth the way you would visit Yellowstone National Park,” said Bezos, as reported by WION, giving rise to his idea of Earth as a “resort” destination in the future.
“This Earth can support, let’s say, 10 billion people to a certain degree. We’d have to work really hard to figure out how to do that without degrading the planet. The solar system can support a trillion people,” he explained.
According to Republic World, to further Bezos’ vision, Blue Origin has been in talks with the UAE government for a partnership that could see the firm use the location as a spaceport. Discussions were reportedly held between the country’s Minister of Economy, Abdullah bin Touq Al-Marri, and the venture’s Vice-President, Brent Sherwood.
While the billionaire is confident that most of humanity could move to other planets in the solar system, with Blue Origin taking on the mandate as “Earth ambassadors,” it’s unclear how he expects to achieve that goal.
“The hard part is not space travel—that part was solved in the 1960s. Not reusability—the space shuttle sort of did that. The hard part is operational reusability, it requires practice to get right,” he said.
