Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) is currently in the process of building Studio City Phase 2 in Macau, a Hollywood-inspired resort project. On Wednesday, it was announced that construction had reached full height.
Ever since its opening in 2015, the destination has been known for its unique aesthetics. With this planned expansion conceptualized in 2017, new leisure, entertainment, and hospitality venues, including one of Asia’s largest indoor and outdoor water parks, are included across 250,000sqm (2,690,978sqft) of two hotel towers.

Inspired by the glitz and glam of old Hollywood, the resort’s “cinematic references” are showcased through “rich detailing, bold geometric forms, and intricate craftsmanship of the Art Deco period.”
Although its visuals take root in the past, its sustainable elements are very much relevant to today as well as suitably forward-facing.
Three different grades of glass with external fins make up the exterior of the building, which are said to reduce solar heat gain and glare while maintaining a comfortable temperature for the patrons within.

Perhaps less obvious, but equally important, is the way the towers were configured: they were organized to encourage natural ventilation throughout the resort. Both these thoughtful design choices will help to reduce energy demand for heating or cooling systems.
In addition to the temperature-conscious design, all the timber and timber-based products used in the architecture were sourced in accordance with Forestry Stewardship Council certification.
“Since opening in 2015, Studio City has become a destination landmark in Macau with its unique entertainment theme and experience,” shares David Sisk, Chief Operating Officer of Macau Resorts, Melco, in a statement.
“The extension project will complement our existing offering of ‘next-generation’ world-class entertainment and further enhance the distinctive Studio City experience.”
Studio City Phase 2 is set for a December 2022 completion.
