One of the main characteristics of a non-fungible token (NFT) is its ownership. Although the digital images can be moved around the internet, there is only one “true” owner, and this is minted on the blockchain. (Unless, of course, a pirating force finds a loophole.)
However, Adidas’ first foray into the metaverse takes that and turns it on its head: it’s a mysterious NFT with a mysterious purpose and no singular owner.
This token was first made available on Thursday on the platform POAP, which is often used to distribute collectibles exclusive to specific events. “This digital collectible is our way of rewarding you for following your curiosity as we explore this new age of originality together,” the description writes.
The terms of service make clear that Adidas maintains ownership for all the NFTs, which is where the concept of the singular owner—arguably one of the, if not the most, appealing aspects of an NFT—is removed.
“This token proves you were here from the beginning of this journey,” Adidas continues. “Keep it safe—it may come in handy.”
Though it sounds slightly sinister, Input has pointed out that it’s likely that having some part to play in the token, even if not owning it, will give the collectors early access to a new product release. Or, it might make them eligible for an exclusive bit of merchandise.
The firm states that this unique NFT is the “first step” to “empower the creators of tomorrow to thrive in the metaverse.” As of the time of publishing, all of the tokens appear to have already been claimed.
On the same day, sportswear rival Nike also made its grand, flourishing entrance into the metaverse, crash-landing into Roblox with Nikeland.
