Although every new year brings us a step further into a totally unknown future, the packaging design trends forecasted for 2022 are tinged with an overarching nostalgia.
Freelance creator platform 99designs by Vista has cooked up a vibrant infographic delving into the types and styles of product packaging. You’ll likely be seeing these in the stores, in online shopping baskets, or perhaps already existing on the shelves you have at home.
11 dynamic styles are highlighted in this infographic, ranging from mischievous illustrations to Y2K iridescence to delightfully minimalistic typography.
Although some of these styles feel like they couldn’t be more different, it somehow all just seems to fit in together. And that’s the beauty of a singular era encapsulated in design.
Sustainability is a topic on the forefront of everyone’s minds, and it’s also come to be reflected in packaging. There’s been a resurgence in the lo-fi “cut ‘n’ paste” style of collage, paying tribute to reused and recycled materials as well as found art. But these layers also give the piece some depth, and help it stand its ground as an “intentionally unintentional” style of its own.
Similarly, “perfectly imperfect” designs are in. After the last two years of the rollercoaster of the pandemic, it’s safe to say that the façade of being polished 24/7 isn’t something that’s as vital as it might’ve been before. After all, we’re all a little weary, and it’s not a little-known fact.
Inspired by eco-friendly principles, the use of natural materials as printing backdrop allows users to take advantage of the texture, giving it an unrefined, unaffected look.
While there are myriad components that go into every style, making it that much more different to the last, these all have one thing in common.
Wherever designers’ imaginations may take them, no matter how far back into the nostalgic past the vision board goes, there is always one common source of inspiration, and what the external packaging seeks to reflect.
And comes in the form of what’s inside: the product itself.
“2022 takes the past and the future and makes it a package deal,” 99designs writes. Because in a time where almost anything is possible, why choose just one when we could enjoy the best of both worlds?
