One draw of video games is the ability to customize—the more, the merrier. With non-fungible tokens exploding into the mainstream, Ubisoft is seeing an untapped world of options that would make the gaming experience unique to each player.
Come December 9, the company will launch the beta version of Ubisoft Quartz, a platform inviting players to earn playable NFT collectibles that can be used as character skins, apparel, armor, and other accessories. The move will make Ubisoft the first major video game business to incorporate in-game NFTs, Decrypt reports.
The NFTs will be powered by the Tezos blockchain, which purports to consume “more than two million times less energy” than Bitcoin, Decrypt quotes. While one Bitcoin transaction is said to match the environmental footprint of a full consecutive year of streaming video, a Tezos transaction is comparable to that of a 30-second clip.
The first Ubisoft game to feature in-game NFTs will be the PC version of tactical shooter Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint. To purchase the unique digital collectibles, which Ubisoft calls ‘Digits’, players would need to be at least 18 years old (the minimum age to own a Tezos wallet) and achieve an XP level five.

Every ‘Digit’ is engraved with its own serial number, visible by other players for bragging rights. In true NFT nature, it can also be sold whenever a player wishes to update their avatar, with the owner’s name forever kept in the item’s record.
When Ubisoft Quartz rolls out in the US, Canada, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, France, Germany, Italy, and Spain, it will give away free NFTs as part of a program for early adopters on December 9, 12, and 15.
Nicolas Pouard, VP of Ubisoft’s Strategic Innovation Lab, calls the launch “the first building block… for developing a true metaverse.”
With mega franchises like Far Cry, Assassin’s Creed, and Just Dance to its name, Ubisoft’s foray into NFTs could take personalization to unprecedented levels.
