IKEA might be the first brand that comes to mind when you think of affordable furniture, but its years and years of experience have given it something collectors want: history. Vintage home products are currently having a moment among furniture collectors, and the spotlight is cast on the flatpack company’s mid-century modern wares.
Delving into years of data across auction sites, HouseholdQuotes has uncovered some of the highest-valued IKEA products ever sold, and then visualized 10 of them in one living room, which it calls “our, um, ‘FÖRTUNE’ living room range.” Could this be the priciest IKEA showroom yet?
The auction record for the greatest amount paid for an IKEA model is reported to have been broken just weeks ago by one ultra-rare, 62-year-old CAVELLI armchair. So as not to make a loss, IKEA founder Ingvar Kamprad only had five units of this “aristocrat” produced, having made the unusual choice to splurge on premium materials with “no expense” spared. The chair sold for 151,000 Swedish kroner (US$16,600) in November.
The main takeaway from this story? Keep your friends close and your highest-quality IKEA furniture closer. Who knows how much it would be worth one day?
