BBC Is Teaching A 10-Week Creative Course In Advertising For Minority Talents
By Mikelle Leow, 03 Jan 2022
While audiences are seeing more of themselves being represented in advertising, and companies are stepping up to become more inclusive, there’s still a long way to go before equity is achieved. According to findings by the World Federation of Advertisers’ first global diversity census in 2021, via Campaign Asia, lack of diversity and inclusion remains to be “a serious concern” in the industry, with 17% stating they’d likely leave their jobs due to exclusion or discrimination.
In hopes to inspire a new, underrepresented generation of talents to lead the industry, BBC Creative is launching an online advertising course, BBC Creative U, for ethnic minorities aged 18 and above. The curriculum, taught by experts from the BBC and elsewhere, aims to equip students with essential skills and acquaint them with contacts to prepare them for challenges in the advertising world.
Taking place every Tuesday, the 10-week masterclass will teach 10 shortlisted students the necessary ropes of idea generation, strategy, copywriting, and art direction. They will also each be assigned to a mentor to guide them during the program, as well as up to three months after.
By the end of the course, graduates will have worked on real BBC briefs and gained experience in a creative agency. Most importantly, they will have a leg up in connecting to an advertising career.
Interested candidates from ethnic minority groups can find out more about BBC Creative U here.
