Chanel No. 5might be a household name, but it seems that the luxury house had been saving up the ‘No. 1’ title for the perfect moment, which is now.
After ending last year with a hangover left by questionable advent calendars, Chanel is getting a fresh, clean start with 2022. It has debuted No. 1 de Chanel, its first venture into eco-responsible beauty.
The anti-aging line endeavors to keep environmental impact low through stringent product formulation methods and sustainable packaging. According to Business of Fashion (BoF), the nine-product collection of skincare, makeup, and a fragrance arrives in packaging containing about 80% recycled materials.
All the bottles and jars are made from lightweight recyclable glass that reduces their weights by up to half those of classic Chanel glass bottles, as per British Vogue. Furthermore, Chanel says the packaging for glass items is printed with organic ink, which consumes less energy due to the lower temperatures demanded in the heating process.
You won’t find cellophane anywhere near this range, and the usual paper leaflets have been replaced with a QR code printed on the boxes to direct customers to learn more about the products.
Notably, No. 1 de Chanel face cream marks the fashion house’s first foray into refillable beauty packaging. “Refilling just twice reduces the face cream’s greenhouse gas emissions by an estimated half,” says Chanel.
The star ingredient is red camellia, hence the unprecedented main hue of the bottles and jars. A little of this flower even goes into the 90% bio-based lid of the No. 1 de Chanel cream.
Chanel’s scientists have been studying the red camellia for about a decade, according to BoF. The range is suitable for all skin types and aims to support the skin’s vitality and repair abilities, which weaken during the aging process.
The formulas themselves feature up to 97% ingredients derived from nature, including the camellia flower, which makes up 76%.
No. 1 de Chanel is now available on the Chanel website and at Ulta stores.
