In a time of crisis, artist-activist Yoko Ono is holding out an olive branch to the world and underscoring a message she’s been boldly advocating for decades: “Imagine Peace.”
Every evening this month, at 20:22 local time, large digital billboards in major cities will light up with this very call for universal unity. Although a timeless one, the message couldn’t be more crucial as Ukraine continues to face Russian invasion.
The activation, created with social art and culture platform CIRCA and art gallery Serpentine, sees “Imagine Peace” being beamed in black type across London, Berlin, Milan, Melbourne, New York, West Hollywood in California, Seoul, and Tokyo.
“Imagining is something that we can all do, even when we have different opinions about how to get there,” prompts Ono.

The movement is in continuity of Ono’s long-standing art project, which began in March 1969 at the Amsterdam Hilton Hotel. Ono was in her honeymoon suite with late husband John Lennon, and the two held a Bed-In in protest of the Vietnam War.
As part of the global intervention, a £100 (US$131) limited-edition print featuring the mantra will be placed on sale, with 100% proceeds dedicated to the United Nations Central Emergency Response Fund.
