When it comes to compassion, these hairy shoes are a cut above the rest. An Australian footwear brand called Volley has added a ‘Mullet Edition’ to its high-top sneakers to spark a conversation about mental health.
The sneakers, available for a limited time, honor the Mullets for Mental Health cause by Black Dog Institute, a nonprofit recognizing the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as Australia’s first inhabitants.

“Why mullets?” you might ask. The organization asks that the public goes “all ears” to recognize symptoms in others who may have a mental disorder but hasn’t sought help. It urges the community to shape and grow a mullet in time for September to show its support or stir up a conversation about mental health awareness.

The footwear is for those who are keen to join the movement but can’t grow out a mullet. Admittedly, it’s going to be cumbersome to trip over hair all the time, so the brand has iterated that the (animal-free) locks can be trimmed, styled, and even dyed. They’re also detachable as they’re attached to Velcro.
The mullet-wearing sneakers are priced at AU$84.99 (US$63), and all profits will go to Black Dog Institute to back its research into the early detection and treatment of common mental illnesses.
