Instagram Penalizes Users Who Repost TikToks… That’s Kind Of Good For Artists?

Instagram has a TikTok pest problem. Videos from the rivaling platform—from which the Meta-owned social network “borrowed” the concept for its Reels feature—are rampant on the app. Instagram previously tried to remedy this by giving out bonuses for original short-form clips, but those still caved in to the ease of sharing TikToks on its platform.
In what looks to be a move to cut out more TikTok videos, Instagram says its algorithm will now rank content based on originality. That means reposts from posts of other users, TikTok, and everywhere else will be pushed down.
“If you create something from scratch, you should get more credit than if you are resharing something that you found from someone else,” Instagram head Adam Mosseri justified in a video detailing the latest updates, which include product tagging. “We’re going to do more to try and value original content more, particularly compared to reposted content,” he furthered.
On one hand, that’s going to bring back the Instagram that early creators know and love. If done right, the new boosts will prioritize fresh and novel content artists have toiled to bring to life; imagine all the photography and art that will dominate your feed again. Meanwhile, you’ll be seeing fewer posts from meme accounts that rely solely on the originality of others.
While Instagram insists the move is a blanket sweep on all reposted content, this smells like a way to mute TikToks so Reels can shine. And what about the roundup accounts that genuinely wish to uplift smaller businesses by sharing their work?
Mosseri personally acknowledged that the algorithm won’t perfectly predict if content is original or not. “If the account is an aggregator, we’ll be more likely to be able to detect that it’s not original,” he said. “[But] if it’s someone pretending to be that original creator, which is less likely but could happen, it’ll be hard for us to know.”
It’s a small step, we guess.
