Mattel Celebrates High-Fashion Designer Vera Wang With Her Own Barbie Doll
By Alexa Heah, 06 May 2022
Just last week, Mattel honored Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II by bestowing the monarch her very own Barbie doll to mark her Platinum Jubilee.
Now, the toymaker is celebrating yet another prominent female figure, this time in the high-fashion arena.
The brand’s latest Creations doll celebrates the “deeply meaningful” impact Wang has made on the fashion industry. The designer grew her brand from a small bridal boutique into one of the most enduring names in the industry.
Previously, Mattel collaborated with Wang on designs for its Barbie Signature bridal gown dolls, but instead of opting for the obvious, the team went with a garment from her 2017 ready-to-wear couture collection instead to best represent the fashion maven.
Wang’s Barbie doll is decked out from head to toe in a monochromatic ensemble, which may upon first glance resemble a gown, but is actually a black romper worn under a chiffon dress with additional puff sleeves, a front slit, and her famed ‘LOVE’ logo on an exaggerated hem.
Not sparing any expense, she’s accessorized with a zipper-detailed peplum belt, matching black socks, and fashion-forward platform heels featuring sculpted buckle details.
The special Barbie doll comes with its own exclusive packaging, with Wang’s face on the backdrop alongside her signature quote: “Success isn’t about the end result, it’s about what you learn along the way.”
