Ginger People Can Enter Movie Theaters For Free To Cool Off During UK Heatwave
By Mikelle Leow, 18 Jul 2022
Ed Sheeran, Prince Harry, Rupert Grint, and all other redheads are welcome for a free screening while the UK endures blazing temperatures of up to 40°C (104°F).
Last Friday, the UK Meteorological Office issued its first-ever ‘Red’ heat warning, forecasting extreme heat for parts of England on Monday, July 18, and Tuesday, July 19.
Perhaps compelled by the ‘Red’ labeling, UK movie theater chain Showcase Cinemas is now offering refuge for red-haired moviegoers who might be most affected by the sun’s rays.
Gingers are most susceptible to burning up as they’re born with the melanocortin-1 receptor (MC1R) gene, which gives them their red hair and fair complexion. The gene produces a different melanin that doesn’t protect skin as adequately from UV radiation.
For the two days of the predicted heatwave, redheads can each get a free movie ticket per day. Hot blockbusters showing on July 18 and 19 include Thor: Love and Thunder, Minions: The Rise of Gru, Top Gun: Maverick, and Jurassic World Dominion.
Mark Barlow, Showcase Cinemas’ UK general manager, explains in a press release that although the nation has been deserving of some sunny weather, the intense heat can be especially harsh for some.
