Nike Debuts Smart, ’Simple’ Black Hoodies That Come Alive With AR
By Nicole Rodrigues, 19 Jul 2022
When it comes to bringing fashion to the digital world, Nike is often at the forefront of innovation. The sportswear giant now seeks to amplify this with a hoodie that lets you wear AR.
While there are plenty of options when it comes to buying a black hoodie, the RTFKT x Nike AR Genesis Hoodie stands out with a NFC (near field communication) chip embedded in its fabric.
The NFC chip includes augmented-reality trackers that accessorizze wearers with special effects invisible in the real world.
You could scan the QR code on the hoodie via your phone camera to bring up options, such as adding digital angel wings. The NFC chip also enables the Nike-acquired Web3 platform RTFKT to add new features over time, like token-exclusive access to real-world events.
RTFKT’s CloneX community and RTFKT x Nike Dunk Genesis owners will be able to purchase the hoodie first, which will be released in December, before its release to the general public. Owners who decide to buy the outerwear online will be eligible for the real-life counterpart.
Ever since Nike’s acquisition of digital product company RTFKT, it has delved deeper into the metaverse, like with Cryptokicks, which were both physical and digital in nature. However, as Nike continues to spearhead the Web3 movement, this could be the first time you will be able to digitally add AR features to your clothes in real-time.
