Petersen Automotive Museum Launches Free Car Design & Sketching Online Course
By Mikelle Leow, 20 Dec 2022
There has been no shortage of futuristic, experimental concepts dreamed up by renowned automakers. For the most part, fans have been on the observing end. Well, no longer, as the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles is launching a free online course that teaches you the ropes of designing and drawing vehicles.
The Auto Design & Sketching module, created with education platform Yellowbrick, is being taught by some of the industry’s biggest names—including Tesla Motors’ chief designer Franz von Holzhausen, Stellantis’ chief design officer Ralph Giles, Chrysler brand CEO Christine Feuell, Hispano Suiza design director Francesc Arenas, and Art Center College of Design Roman Yneges.
Learners will first discover fundamentals like the history of the car, core design principles, and critical historic auto design trends. They’ll also explore case studies of some of the best-designed cars in history, such as the DMC DeLorean (1981), the Lamborghini Gallardo (2004), Ford Shelby Mustang (2005), and Tesla Model S (2012).
Finally, equipped with what they know, they’ll conceptualize automotive designs and learn about the process of bringing them to life.
There’ll be no need to speed through the program, since it is self-paced. The three-section course is also split into bite-sized lessons lasting no longer than 15 minutes.
The course, which will be available in January, will stay open through December 17, 2023. Anyone aged 13 and up can enroll in the program.
