AI Bot To Serve As ‘Lawyer’ And Defend A Client In Court
By Nicole Rodrigues, 09 Jan 2023
A defendant in a court case taking place sometime next month is bringing in a rather unorthodox lawyer with them to the stands. Instead of enlisting the help of a human lawyer, they’re looking at the services of an AI bot.
Details of the defendant remain under lock and key. However, it is known that the case centers around a speeding violation, and the client is at risk of a speeding ticket.
DoNotPay, a legal service chatbot that helps people go up against large organizations for applying the wrong fees, parking tickets, and even robocalling, is behind this digitized lawyer.
Sometime last year, the company introduced a bot that helps human fight to lower the cost of their bills without them having to speak to customer care.
In this instance, it would assist its client through an earpiece where it will listen in on what is happening in the courtroom through a smartphone and pass out responses in rebuttal.
Of course, one would have to wonder about the legality of hiring an AI lawyer. According to CEO Joshua Browder, the company had found a court that allowed the use of earpieces. However, this loophole is yet to prove a legal avenue for placing bots in the courtroom.
AI generators have taken up many hats over the years, from creating art to writing poetry or even narrating audiobooks, and now with its latest entry into the justice system. Whether or not it will aid or have negative impacts on the law remains unseen, but this case could be a starting point for how we as a society can move forward with the persistent integration of AI into our everyday lives.
Last year, a robot artist known as Ai-Da stood in court to testify about the future of the AI art scene. Though in this case, its creator, Aidan Meller, reiterated before the session closed out that Ai-Da stood not as an advocate for the robot revolution but as an art project.
With that being said, DoNotPay understands that the client might not be favored on through the case, and if they do not win, the firm will pay for the ticket in full. However, if it successfuly aids the client, well, it’d be an excellent platform for the firm to showcase how AI can also protect you from the law.
