Juice Packaging That Peels Like A Fruit Can Be Eaten Or Dissolved In Water

As hard as companies try to make their products as easily eco-friendly as possible, people still find it hard to adhere to recycling guidelines. Whether it’s making sure to toss things in the right bin, stripping labels, or separating bottle caps, consumers might have to jump through hoops to make sure their trash is ready to be repurposed.
So what if there was a way to help the environment without going through the trouble of recycling?
Tomorrow Machine envisions just as such with its latest ‘GoneShells’ drink bottle that can peel away at itself and decompose naturally. The bottle is made out of potatoes—another tick on the sustainable checklist—transformed into a transparent plastic-like material so pure you can even munch on the packaging.
The packaging was inspired by a potato’s natural way of protecting itself. Its skin, like various fruits, including oranges and bananas, must be peeled away and thrown before you can access what’s inside. The GoneShells bottles are not much different. Although, you should probably wait till you’re done drinking your juice before you start peeling away.
Tomorrow Machine has linked up with juice company Eckes Granini and its Brämhults brand to create a line of totally compostable packaging that can be dissolved in water at home or even eaten, if curiosity gets the better of you.
PET bottles have long plagued the planet, and there currently seems to be no viable alternative that can provide consumers with the ease and simplicity of plastic. GoneShells is a promising new start for CPG manufacturing. The only challenge now is to make it scalable for broader adoption.
