Hyundai & Jeremy Scott Upcycle Old Car Scraps Into High-Fashion Pieces
By Nicole Rodrigues, 25 Mar 2023
Hyundai and ex-Moschino creative director Jeremy Scott are racing to save old car parts from landing in a junkyard by turning them into haute couture pieces ready to zoom down the runway.
‘Re:Style’ 2023 is a fashion range that asks: why shouldn’t one look to cars as inspiration for clothes? In that sense, everything that could be salvaged (even unconventional items, see: wheel-plates) and turned into material for apparel was incorporated into the collection.
With that, some outfits from the collection include ones made from shredded tires, seatbelts transformed into straps, side-view mirrors churned into glittering dresses, and a wheel plate used as the centerpiece for a long black gown.
“When Hyundai approached me, I felt both honored and challenged. I love the idea of crafting something with materials that I’ve never used before. Leftover tail light and seatbelts were a first, but it shows that with creativity, you can breathe new life into anything,” Scott mentions.
Hyundai’s future goal of becoming carbon-neutral by 2040 underpins the clothes and delivers a message of an eco-friendly future.
The collection will only be available for viewing in Seoul, South Korea, until April 9.
