World’s Most Expensive License Plate Rides Off With Buyer For $15 Million

It takes an unimaginable kind of wealth to agonize over your license plate—the sort that will have you spilling US$15 million for yours.
That’s about the amount that someone coughed up for a plate in Dubai, now considered to be the most expensive license plate in the world. The buyer paid 55 million dirhams for it at a charity sale held by Emirates Auction on April 8.
Unsurprisingly, the metallic road bragging right is engraved with a single letter and single number—‘P7’, to be exact—which are coveted features of license plates. Overall, it has a barebones, all-white design.
The license plate outpaces the previous record holder by a relatively small amount. According to the Guinness World Records, in 2008, a businessman named Saeed Abdul Ghaffar Khouri spilled 52.2 million dirhams (about US$14.2 million at the time) on a United Arab Emirates plate labeled with the number one.
As for P7, proceeds from its sale will be forwarded to Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid’s 1 Billion Meals Endowment initiative to bring food aid to vulnerable communities.
The identity of the new owner hasn’t been made public. For now, the only way of knowing is if they zipped by your ride with their presumably opulent car.
