Roblox is taking playing the field to new levels, it seems. The long-standing online game platform built with kids in mind now wants to help adults find love amid ones and zeroes.
The company’s CEO David Baszucki brought the revelation forward at the game’s developer’s conference, noting that he envisions Roblox expanding into a dating app of sorts for users aged 17 and up over the next five years.
“Thousands of adults will meet for the first time in Roblox dating experiences and subsequently form real-life relationships,” Baszucki declared.
The virtual world has watched its users grow up through its 17 years. Its romantic ambitions could be its way of holding onto their loyalty and avoiding another Andy and Woody situation. It’s like how LEGO has reimagined its sets for adults too.
As it stands, Roblox is already building a more age-appropriate community for players aged 17 and above. According to its guidelines, users can craft 17+ experiences with “graphic and realistic-looking depictions of violence and heavy bloodshed,” as well as display “non-sexual expressions of love and affection.”
A long five-year roadmap into dating may be needed. As a virtual platform frequented by children, Roblox has been a hotbed for groomers and predators. The game will need to iron out some kinks to become a safe destination to find true love.
