OpenAI’s next big language model, GPT-5, is said to be prepping for a potential summer launch. This successor to the current GPT-4 promises significant upgrades, with early testers raving about its exceptional “material” improvements.
Behind the scenes, the artificial intelligence giant has been busy showcasing GPT-5 to its enterprise customers through demos, particularly highlighting upgrades to ChatGPT, sources familiar with the project confide in Business Insider. The focus on industry collaboration ensures GPT-5 is adaptable and effective across diverse applications.
The response has been overwhelmingly positive. One CEO, thoroughly impressed by the live demo customized for his company’s data, remarked, “It’s really good, like materially better,” in a conversation with the news outlet.
Among the features to look out for is GPT-5’s ability to interact with external “AI agents” also developed by OpenAI. These agents can perform specific tasks independently, suggesting a future where the generative AI platform can handle more complex, autonomous functions.
Like GPT-4, the upcoming release will be multimodal, meaning it can accept text and visual inputs.
While the exact launch date is still up in the air, the target is set for the summer of 2024. OpenAI is in the process of training GPT-5, followed by rigorous safety testing with both internal teams and external “red teams.” This beta phase is crucial for ironing out any kinks and ensuring the model is ready for public use.
