Studio Ghibli, the legendary Japanese animation house behind classics like Spirited Away and My Neighbor Totoro, is bringing more enchantment to the lives of fans and creatives with a rare offering: free-to-use images from its latest, Oscar-winning, film, The Boy and the Heron (or How Do You Live? in Japan).
Hayao Miyazaki’s studio first released downloadable stills from its film library—spanning the archives of Spirited Away, Ponyo, Howl’s Moving Castle, Princess Mononoke, My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki’s Delivery Service, and beyond—back in 2020, in a gesture of goodwill during the pandemic. It’s been keeping up with the ritual since.
While the company began giving away Boy and the Heron images last year, it’s now introduced seven fresh additions, including scenes depicting the boy, Mahito, with the heron’s feather, and of bird poop raining down on him.

As with the other uploads, these downloads can be printed and remixed at no cost, but fans are advised to “use them freely within the bounds of common sense.”
