There’s a new way to purchase a brand new Samsung Galaxy Fold at a heavy discount. That’s because it’s the same phone as the US$399 Escobar Fold 2 from Escobar Inc, founded by the brother of late drug lord Pablo Escobar.
Tech YouTubers like Marques Brownlee and Mrwhosetheboss got their hands on the smartphone, taking the risk of paying for the product with their own money, and learned that the gadget was just a Samsung Galaxy Fold slapped with a gold sticker at the hinge.
The drug kingpin’s brother, Roberto De Jesus Escobar Gaviria, said the first-gen Escobar Fold would posthumously blow “Apple Boy Steve” Jobs’ mind, so his preference on smartphone brands is now apparent.
Weirdly enough, the Escobar Fold 2 is being touted on the Escobar Inc website as a “Samsung Killer.” The rationale behind this claim is unclear, but being one-fifth the price of the US$1,980 Galaxy Fold helps, perhaps?
The company purportedly managed to secure the Samsung units and resell them for cheap by taking in phones that have been returned, or couldn’t reach Samsung’s quality control standards, as well as excessive stock from retailers and wholesalers. In the press release for the Escobar Fold 2, Pablo Escobar’s brother even said he wished to be the “overstock kingpin of electronical devices.”
A distinct addition in the Escobar Fold 2 is the preloaded wallpaper featuring the mugshot of Pablo Escobar. If that isn’t a deterrent, you can find out more about the new smartphone here.
