The wrongful killing of Minnesota black man George Floyd by a white police officer has fired up protests across cities by anguished crowds.
In Richmond, the former capital of the Confederacy, monuments such as the likeness of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee have been defaced to bemoan the saddening loss of an innocent man and condemn a lack of empathy for minority groups.
Graffitied phrases like, “Black Lives Matter,” “No More White Supremacy,” and, “Blood on Your Hands,” are seen scrawled on the statue, according to the Washington Post. Protestors also hung a noose at the statue of Confederacy president Jefferson Davis, who was a firm believer of slavery.
Elsewhere, the United Daughters of the Confederacy headquarters lit up on fire on Sunday morning. The blaze was later extinguished by firefighters.
Memorials for Stonewall Jackson and James Ewell Brown “Jeb” Stuart have also been vandalized.
According to the Associated Press, protesters in Charleston sprayed “BLM” and “traitors” on the Confederate Defenders statue, while red handprints and the text “spiritual genoside” can be seen on a Confederate landmark at the University of Mississippi, as reported by the Oxford Eagle.
