In an astounding move, US president Donald Trump reacted coolly to Kanye West’s announcement to run for president this year, but advised his friend to treat the November 2020 election as “a trial run” instead of putting all his eggs in one basket.
During an interview with RealClearPolitics in the Oval Office on Tuesday, POTUS described West setting his sights on a presidential bid this year as “very interesting.”
However, he pointed out the valid consideration that it could be too late for West to amass sufficient signatures for his run this year, as the deadline for registration has already lapsed in several states.
Nevertheless, he encouraged the reality star to attempt his bid this year, but only to “view this as a trial run for what’s going to happen in four years” for the 2024 election.
It’s unclear where the YEEZY founder truly stands in his political allegiances, though. The rapper has had a cordial bromance with the president, but has also openly expressed his support for the Black Lives Matter campaign by covering the college tuition for George Floyd’s daughter and pledging a US$2 million donation to Black-owned businesses as well as the family members of Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor. Meanwhile, Trump has chastised the movement and called for physical solutions of “law and order” to stop Black Lives Matter protests.
According to Forbes, West previously divulged that he would be a combination of Trump and Bernie Sanders if he were president.
