Social media users had their circuits buzzing after US president Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump visited Mount Rushmore for a pre-4 July celebration and fireworks display.
The monument’s name became a trending topic on Twitter, leading some to imagine Trump’s face being carved among the heads of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln.
“I want Trump’s face on Mt. Rushmore,” was one of several similar reactions to the 3 July visit.
His allies, of course, thought it was a brilliant idea. Abigail Marone, Press Assistant for the Republican National Committee, tweeted a doctored photo of this vision and said the landmark would be “improved” if Trump’s head had been included in the scene.
Lauren Boebert, 3rd Congressional District nominee, suggested that adding his face would be “the only change that we will consider making to Mount Rushmore.”
On the other side, critics grimaced at the idea, with one social media user flying the infamous Trump Baby balloon over a picture of Mount Rushmore. Another thought things through even longer and harder, and added a phallic monument below the structure to illustrate their perception of the US president.
During his visit, Trump lashed out about recent anti-racism protests that resulted in Confederate statues being defaced and pulled down, describing them as “a merciless campaign to wipe out our history” with a “goal… to end America.”
“I am here as your president to proclaim before the country, and before the world, this monument will never be desecrated,” he declared. “These heroes will never be defaced. Their legacy will never ever be destroyed their achievements will never be forgotten, and Mount Rushmore will stand forever. As an eternal tribute to our forefathers, and to our freedom.”
The controversial and unusually-timed statement was met with reminders from the public that Mount Rushmore is situated in the Black Hills, a sacred place for nearly 60 tribes of Native Americans that was illegally taken in 1873. The monument has long incited associations with white colonialism and cultural erasure.
The only change that we will consider making to Mount Rushmore is adding President Trump’s face to it.

I know it's controversial, but I'm not totally against Trump's head being somehow added to Mount Rushmore.

I would donate to the gofundme to have Trumps image carved into Mt Rushmore. I could image one collective explosion of heads and the image is delicious.
