President Joe Biden has inherited a “mess” from former president Donald Trump, as depicted on the new cover of TIME magazine.
The stirring illustration, created by artist Tim O’ Brien, shows Biden on “Day One” of his presidency, looking out of the Oval Office’s window, which appears to be surrounded by flames.
There’s graffiti scrawled on the curtains and the Resolute Desk, which is filled with fast food cartons and documents. The other parts of the room look chaotic with stacked papers.
“For the past several days, after pondering where we are as a nation, what just happened in Washington, and what Joe Biden faces as he takes the office of President, I was working on a piece that is now on the cover of the new issue of TIME magazine,” O’ Brien tweeted.
O’ Brien’s art is meant to allude to the problems left behind by Trump’s administration, which now have to be cleaned up.
“Biden now leads a country divided between Americans who believe in facts and Americans who distrust them, between those who want a multiracial Republic and those who seek to invalidate non-white votes, between those with faith in democratic institutions and those who put faith in Trump,” TIME’s Charlotte Alter wrote in the accompanying essay titled How President Biden Handles A Divided America Will Define His Legacy.
In reality, Biden’s Oval Office looks a lot neater. The new president took creative liberties to redesign the space since moving into the White House.
