Advertising agency Ogilvy and Refinery 29 have partnered with Girl Up—an initiative launched by the United Nations Foundation to empower girls—to create a spot marking a huge moment in history.
It was a milestone for many Americans who watched Kamala Harris being sworn in as the 49th vice president of the United States.
The film, titled Today We Rise, captures this historic moment through the eyes of girls who watched the half-Black and half-Indian woman become the highest-ranking female politician in American history. It portrays the impact that Harris will have for generations to come.
The powerful ad shows images of Harris taking her oath of office, which was administered by Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor.
It was filmed and produced by a network of photographers and cinematographers across the country during the inauguration.
Serena Young, Girl Up club leader, said, “Watching the first female VP, Kamala Harris, being sworn in, was a moment both monumental and inconsequential.”
“It felt like a long-time-coming, a dream that was envisioned by millions and hundreds of years, finally turning to reality. It was 60 seconds that flew by too fast, but seconds I will remember forever,” she continued.
