IKEA’s resident shark, the BLÅHAJ soft toy, has been the star of some pretty wholesome memes, with customers placing it in showrooms to seemingly enjoy the furniture as humans would. The brand is now doubling down on the plushie’s celebrity status in the most toothsome way.
IKEA stores in Taiwan have begun serving adorable shark-themed baos, or buns, and they’re just as pillowy as their inspiration. Like BLÅHAJ, they’re colored in blue, and are shaped with ~scary~ fins and an open mouth. The traditional steaming process creates a sheen similar to the appearance of shark skin.
Sink your teeth into the character buns, and you’ll find that they’re stuffed with a nutty sesame filling. Other ingredients listed in their advertisement include wheat flour, red bean, yeast, and soybean powder, suggesting that the carnivorous creatures could be vegan, too.
“The blue shark can swim very far, dive really deep and hear your heart beating from far away,” reads IKEA’s description for the original soft toy. In this case, the buns dive really deep into your appetite for cute foods, and can hear your heart beating for them to get in your belly.
Priced at just TW$35 (US$1.25) a pop, the buns are apparently being snapped up so quickly that stores have set purchase limits for them, preventing people from going all blood-thirsty on the treats, according to news outlet Mothership.SG.
One customer also reported a location looking unusually packed on May 3 because of the sale of shark buns. And that was a Monday, probably the last day of the week you’d think of making a stop at an IKEA store.
