Ever since it landed on Mars six months ago, the Perseverance rover has been circling the planet, snapping photos and snippets of film to illustrate its journey thus far. To date, it has captured 125,487 raw images.
Google has decided to commemorate its anniversary in a short video celebrating the rover’s achievements. In it, the company imagines what it would be like for the rover if it were to use Google Photos and its features.
At 53 seconds long, the clip is set to Put On Your Sunday Clothes by Jerry Herman, a song that reminds viewers of Perseverance’s big-screen counterpart, Wall-E. Short and sweet.
Framing the rover as a live, wandering, sentient being, the video begins with a closeup of the Perseverance, taking in its surroundings with its camera looking wide-eyed. It captures a photo before the image shrinks into the Google Photos UI, scrolling through categories. Shadow Selfies, Landscapes, Rocks, Additional Rocks, and Recent Trips make an appearance.
The Maps feature is flaunted too, showing the images captured at the Jezero Crater. A cheeky in-app search for “martians” doesn’t bring up any photos, of course. However, “dunes” does, and the app is able to spot the Ingenuity in one of the photos and add it as a pet under “People & pets.”
The video, kept short and sweet, demonstrates that Google Photos can certainly be used by everyone, even a rover in outer space, far removed from the rest of us here on Earth. It’s a heartwarming way for Google to say, “Happy six-month-anniversary, Perseverance, and thank you for the images,” while reminding us what the Photos app can do, of course.
