Unlike the colorful 3D advertisements that actually smoke like hot coffee and serve as mini hotels for bees, McDonald’s latest interactive billboard stands out for its simplicity. But it’s commendable, no less—the fast-food giant is putting its money where customers’ mouths are.
To celebrate the McFlurry’s 21st anniversary on UK menus, McDonald’s has installed a “walk-thru” billboard on London’s South Bank that gives out free servings of the frozen treat. While drive-thrus are made for those on wheels, anyone on foot at the Builder’s Yard under Hungerford Bridge can grab an Oreo McFlurry from this “walk-thru,” which will stay open until August 22.
Apart from a cutout service window, the billboard—produced by advertising agency Leo Burnett London—is as simple as it gets. Splashed in white, it’s accompanied by the text, “Fancy a moment to just enjoy?” Passersby are encouraged to slow down and appreciate sweet pockets of joy amid the pressures of life.
The activation follows a McFlurry van appearing outside at-home birthday parties as part of the McFlurry’s 21st-birthday bash, as well as serves as an extension to McDonald’s UK’s ‘Fancy a McDonald’s?’ brand platform, says Campaign UK.
“McDonald’s has always been a generous brand and our ‘Fancy a McDonald’s?’ brand platform allows that thinking to come to life in less traditional, more unexpected ways,” describes Leo Burnett executive creative director Mark Elwood. “Fancy a free McFlurry, anyone?”
