Hold your horses. Two powerhouses of high-end design, Ferrari and Sir Jony Ive, have signed a partnership to create new products for the supercar brand.
A press release published on Monday by Ferrari’s parent company Exor reveals that the luxury automaker and Ive’s design firm LoveFrom “will bring together Ferrari’s legendary performance and excellence with LoveFrom’s unrivaled experience and creativity that has defined extraordinary world-changing products.”
Prior to opening his studio in 2019, Ive famously led Apple’s design team in the better part of his three decades with the Cupertino tech giant. He is credited as a key driving force behind iconic products like the iPod, iPhone, Apple Watch, and iPad. Ive and LoveFrom are said to still be in close collaboration with Apple, though his decision to head his own firm would grant him the freedom to design for other prominent companies, like Airbnb.
With the Ferrari deal still pacing into its “first expression,” little has been said about what would emerge from it. As of now, it’s unclear if LoveFrom will help design supercars or accessories; but either way, any product with Jony Ive’s flair is bound to impress.
What’s confirmed is that the partnership will be a “long-term, multi-year” one, so even if the pair decides to start slow, the collaboration could eventually evolve to include cars. Would an Ive-designed vehicle arrive before the Apple Car does?
LoveFrom comprises designers, artists, architects, engineers, writers, and musicians, so any of these elements could be imbued into Ferrari’s upcoming products.
Addressing the freshly-inked deal, Ive and fellow LoveFrom cofounder Marc Newson describe: “We are thrilled to be embarking on such an important, long-term collaboration with Ferrari and more broadly Exor. As Ferrari owners and collectors, we could not be more excited about collaborating with this extraordinary company and in particular with the design team expertly led by Flavio Manzoni.”
They add, “We see some uniquely exciting opportunities working together which we believe will yield important and valuable work.”
