At Apple’s Unleashed event this week, the tech giant debuted its highly-anticipated AirPods 3 alongside its new range of MacBook Pros.
The third-generation earphones sport a similar “open” design to its two predecessors, but is shaped more like the brand’s premium AirPods Pro. They feature a shorter stem and are positioned to fit directly into the ears for comfort.
New features of the earphones include the introduction of Apple’s spatial audio technology, with dynamic head tracking—so voices in video calls sound like they’re coming from the direction of the person positioned on the screen. There’s also ‘HD Voice Quality’, so friends on FaceTime will sound clearer than before.
Additionally, the AirPods 3 boast a longer battery life, with six hours of playback on a single charge (up to 30 with the charging case) as compared to the five previously. The stems come with the same sensors to pause or play, and the earphones are sweat- and water-resistant with an IPX4 certification.
According to CNET, despite the redesign, the AirPods 3 (US$179) still don’t come with active noise-cancelation, so if that’s a key consideration of yours, it’ll be best to stick with the Pro (US$249).
The AirPods 3 are available for preorder here, and will be on sale online and in Apple Stores starting October 26.
