Adidas’ entry into the metaverse has been a sort-of-there, sort-of-not affair for the last week or so. Adding to the relative mystery of the sportswear brand’s foray into innovating a creative, original future is a couple of new relationships.
First up is a partnership with cryptocurrency company Coinbase, which was announced in an extremely no-frills tweet. Adidas says that it’s “probably nothing,” which is most likely going to amount to probably something.

Probably nothing.
The firm is keeping everything behind closed doors for now, though. There are, however, rumors that the partnership could lead to a digital assets payment system for the company, as reported by FXStreet.
The second is an interaction between Adidas’ official Twitter account and the metaverse project Sandbox, with the latter asking, “What if we invite all of the original thinkers and do-ers to design our future together?”
adiVerse anyone? 🤔

This prompted Adidas to suggest “adiVerse,” which may well be a name for the metaverse-to-be by the brand, something akin to Nikeland—rival Nike’s metaverse within Roblox, where it plans to sell sneakers.
CoinDesk has also noted that the sporting goods company seems to have already made a purchase of a chunk of “land” in the Sandbox’s metaverse, perhaps in preparation of the building of something great.
“Adidas Originals is diving into the Metaverse and headed for the Sandbox with our first immersive and always-on virtual experience. Join us as we take our first steps into this brave new world of originality,” writes a short descriptor on the Sandbox website.
Sandbox’s native currency SAND has since surged around 25% after this interaction.
