Even with the internet within reach, citydwellers are subjected to a barrage of fake health news. Imagine what life’s like for regions where access to health services and education is limited.
While new forms of COVID-19 medication—like pills and a skin patch that doesn’t require refrigeration—are being developed to make vaccines and treatments more portable for hard-to-reach communities, Pfizer has found another way to raise healthcare awareness in far-flung places like the mountainous village of Baimiao, Szechuan: drone light shows.
Such stunts are done to death in cities—and they’re deemed a “cliche,” even, according to creative agency F5 Shanghai. In this remote region, though, they could convey lifesaving health advice “in very unforgettable ways.” Together with Pfizer, F5 Shanghai sent 1,000 drones to form “Healthy Copters” and share health tips “for every member of the family—baby, child, mother, father, grandfather, and grandmother” back in September.

Since health education here is limited, Pfizer wanted to eliminate any risk of misunderstanding. A narrator was engaged to explain the imagery on the ground. The pictograms themselves were created after discussion with the local health government to ensure the graphics were relevant and easy for residents to interpret.
“We’re so grateful that we were able to help Pfizer spread their innovative spirit to places as far as Baimiao village,” says Adams Fan, founder of F5 Shanghai. “We’ve always admired their innovative use of technology in pushing the boundaries of biopharmaceuticals, and so we hope that what we created together this year was able to change all these villagers’ lives for the better.”
